Pick-by-Scan
Pick-by-Scan is a technology-supported order picking method in which employees are guided through the picking process using barcode scanners or mobile data capture devices.
What is Pick-by-Scan?
With Pick-by-Scan, the worker receives all necessary information via a mobile device. Each step of the process is confirmed by scanning storage locations and items.
This creates a guided and documented picking process.
How does Pick-by-Scan work in practice?
The worker receives the next picking order on their device and is guided to the corresponding storage location. There, they first scan the storage location and then the item.
The system verifies the inputs in real time and confirms the correct pick. Errors can thus be detected and avoided immediately.
What role does a WMS play?
A Warehouse Management System forms the basis for Pick-by-Scan. It provides the picking orders, processes the scan data, and ensures complete documentation of all warehouse movements.
It also enables the optimization of travel paths and the prioritization of orders.
Advantages and limitations
Pick-by-Scan offers high process reliability and transparency. At the same time, it is relatively easy to implement and therefore widely used.
However, the method requires manual interaction, which can limit speed compared to automated solutions.
Typical use cases
Pick-by-Scan is the standard in many warehouses and is used in both industry and retail.
