RFID is the abbreviation for "Radio-Frequency Identification". This technology enables wireless data transfer between an RFID system and an RFID tag.

The components of a standard RFID system are

  • RFID-Tag: This is the passive or active device that contains information and communicates wirelessly with the reader. Passive tags are activated by the energy of the reader, while active tags have their own energy source.
  • RFID-reader: This device reads the information from the RFID tag through radio communication. It emits electromagnetic signals and receives the responses from the RFID tags.
  • Database: The captured information is stored in a database and can be used for various applications, such as inventory management, access control, logistics, and much more.

RFID technology is used in various areas, including logistics, retail, healthcare, identification and access control. It enables the automatic capture of data without direct visual contact, making it efficient for many applications, e. g. for warehouse management systems.
