Pick & Pack

Pick & Pack is a two-stage order picking strategy in which items are first collected and then assembled and packed according to individual orders.

What is Pick & Pack?

In Pick & Pack, the processes of item picking and order assembly are separated. This allows both steps to be optimized independently.

This structure enables efficient handling of large order volumes.

How does Pick & Pack work in practice?

First, items are often collected as part of batch picking. They are then transferred to a packing station, where they are assigned to individual orders and packed.

This two-stage process ensures a clear separation of tasks.

What role does a Warehouse Management System (WMS) play?

A WMS coordinates both process steps and ensures that items are assigned correctly. It controls both the picking phase and the packing processes and integrates them with shipping and logistics systems.

Advantages and limitations

Pick & Pack enables high efficiency and is highly scalable. At the same time, however, complexity increases, as additional process steps and infrastructure are required.

Typical use cases

This method is particularly common in e-commerce and among fulfillment service providers.
